How We Score Units
Our scoring system is designed to give you a comprehensive, honest view of each unit based on real student experiences.
The Basics
Each review consists of twelve individual ratings across different categories. All ratings use a 1-5 star scale, where:
- 1 star = Poor
- 2 stars = Below Average
- 3 stars = Average
- 4 stars = Good
- 5 stars = Excellent
These twelve ratings are then aggregated to create an overall score for the unit.

Overall Score
The overall score is automatically calculated by aggregating the twelve category ratings. This provides a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of the unit based on multiple dimensions of the student experience, rather than a single subjective rating. The aggregation ensures that all aspects of the unit are fairly represented in the final score.
Unit Score Calculation
Each unit's displayed scores are simple averages of all approved reviews:
- Each category score = average of that category across all approved reviews
- Overall score = average of all the aggregated scores from approved reviews
- Only reviews that have passed moderation are included in the averages
Example: If a unit has 10 approved reviews with workload ratings of [3, 4, 2, 4, 3, 5, 3, 4, 3, 4], the displayed workload score would be 3.5 stars.
Review Moderation
All reviews are moderated before publication to ensure they follow our community guidelines. We check for spam, inappropriate content, and adherence to our standards. This ensures that only genuine, helpful reviews contribute to unit scores.
Helpful Reviews (Likes)
Students can mark reviews as helpful by clicking the "like" button. This helps surface the most valuable feedback to other students.
Important: Each IP address can only like a review once to prevent manipulation and ensure the integrity of the system.
