About RateMyUnits
The purpose of RateMyUnits
The Origin
Developed by an engineering student at the University of Sydney, RateMyUnits aims to create a more connected and informed university community. Our mission is to provide current and prospective students with transparent, student-driven insights into academic units, enabling them to make well-informed decisions about their studies through honest reviews and feedback from past and present students.
The Vision
A university unit rating platform is not a new concept. However, as a student in Australia, the existing options are either too archaic, poorly maintained, or focused on professors rather than units. RateMyUnits takes a different approach by evaluating units across 12 comprehensive components that capture the entire student experience, from workload and assessment to teaching quality and real-world applicability.
Most importantly, we focus on units of study, not individual lecturers. What matters most is the unit structure, content, and overall experience. For all the students on Reddit calling for a centralized platform, RateMyUnits is here to transform your university journey through real past student insights.
Why Choose RateMyUnits?
Ideated and created after a realisation for the need of such a site, RateMyUnits is built with the goal of making your university experience just a bit simpler. (Or, for you to seek some petty revenge against a unit that screwed you over...)
Anonymity
Too many sites make you sign up, only to have your data harvested and your information leaked. The best thing about us is that we collect ZERO personal information; no google, email, etc. We won't have a data breach, and even if the ShinyHunters hack our servers, there is nothing to gain. (Not that we are important enough for them anyways)
Standardised Review Formula & Verification
People have a different internal scale, depending on the range of numbers they deem 'good' or 'bad'. Although this still exists, we try to minimalize and standardize the overall ratings by using 12 carefully selected criteria for the academic and student life aspects of a unit. By doing this, the overall rating not only reflects the rating of many components (and not just one hot headed component like difficulty of marking), and aims to minimise subjective scale bias.
Informed Decisions
For elective courses, browse RateMyUnits to see whether it is a good choice to take a unit or not. For mandatory units, browse the reviews and useful tips provided by past students!
Community Driven
RateMyUnits relies on the student community, and each individual's inputs. So join us, review on the site, and help us grow! Any units, universities or other features that you want to suggest? Contact us, and we will respond within a day!

Our terms of use and policies are written in plain English and cover: what data we collect (e.g., account email, optional enrolment proof, usage analytics), how we use it, retention and deletion options, cookies/tracking, acceptable-use rules, intellectual property, and notice-and-takedown for defamation or copyright. We also outline jurisdiction, and how to contact us for privacy requests. You'll find Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, and Content Guidelines linked in the site footer on every page.
